NARS Velvet Matte lip pencils ($34 AU) are one of my favourite matte formulas, and I’m completely besotted with the shade Dolce Vita. I already own Dolce Vita in the regular lipstick, and also the lipgloss form- but I think that the Velvet Matte lip pencil is by far the most interesting version of the three.
Both Dolce Vita and Red Square are completely matte- a smooth matte formula that glides on the lips quite easily and doesn’t feel heavy or drying on the lips at all. Not bad for a matte! Lasting power is excellent for Red Square (4-5hrs before noticable fading), and average for Dolce Vita (about 2 hrs).
Red Square is a warm orange toned red with almost full pigmentation in one swipe. It swatches warmer on my skin than it looks on my lips. Dolce Vita is a neutral to warm guava rose colour with medium and buildable pigmentation- it is such a flattering shade.
My only gripe with these products is the fact that you need to sharpen them. I hate having to sharpen pencils because they are inconvenient, (particularly if I’m travelling), and you lose product each time you sharpen. At $34 a pop, I don’t understand why NARS didn’t make these a twist-up type pencil, like Clinique did with their Chubby Sticks.
