Illamasqua I’MPERFECT speckled liner aka Jackson Pollock FOTD

On Sunday morning I was having a play with the ‘speckled’ eyeliner look inspired by Illamasqua’s imagery with their new I’mperfect collection.

The initial plan was to keep it subtle and delicate, but I got a little bit over excited and went all Jackson Pollock on my face. P walked in, and asked me what was wrong with my eyes- I said I was doing ‘makeup art’ – he looked doubtful and asked whether I was going to wear it out to brunch.

Oh well.

Spring Racing Carnival appropriate fuschia smokey eye FOTD

A couple of weeks ago I got an email from a reader with a makeup look request- the reader, Anna, wanted me to recreate the look on the model in the image with a few tweaks to suit her complexion.

I love these requests because they get me out of my makeup comfort zone and my blogging comfort zone. What a fun look you’ve chosen Anna-great pick! It was good timing too, because I think this look would work well with a fascinator and a glass of bubbly at the Melbourne Cup Spring Racing Carnival next Tuesday.

Spring Racing Carnival appropriate fuschia smokey eye

Spring Racing Carnival appropriate fuschia smokey eye

I have pale olive skin, black hair and green eyes.  I want the green to really ‘pop’.)

( I especially really like how vivid and colorful the eye makeup is, but that it still manages to look ‘soft‘, pretty and blended in (no hard lines or edges).

And lastly, for the lips, my lips are naturally a darker rose or cranberry color.  So I would prefer something a slightly darker (instead of the pinkish color the model has), while still maintaining a pretty ‘flushed’ look.

I love dramatic makeup (in general), but I prefer to use as little black as possible.  I like to get creative & use lots of color without looking too ‘circus-y’!  ( Vibrant but soft at the same time. ) If / when you have time and think you might be able to do a step-by-step, I would be immensely grateful.

Thank you for listening & keep up the lovely work!

Kind wishes,

Anna

As you can tell, the image of the requested look has been edited with photoshop to achieve the high contrast, surreal, effect. I played around the FOTD shot above with photoshop to approximate the high contrast effect so that it gives you a rough idea of how the makeup that I’ve done changes with editing.

To be honest, I don’t think it turned out like the requested look- I’m missing some serious bottom lash action and bleached brows, but I quite like this fuschia smokey eye.

Antique Gold Smoky eye FOTD inspired by Versace S/S

Versace Spring/Summer 2013

Versace Spring/Summer 2013

Hi everyone!

Hope you’ve all had a good start to the week. I’ve just gotten back from an amazing weekend away exploring the Great Ocean Road and Warrnambool with my boyfriend, and currently daydreaming about putting a deposit on a waterfront property somewhere along there. A gal can dream, right?

Before I left, I put together a FOTD inspired by the beauty looks on Versace Spring Summer runways during Milan Fashion Week.  I love a great smoky eye, and this one updates  the classic smoky eye with a little bit of gold making it a great look for both day and night.

FOTD makeup breakdown:

Eyes:

– Two faced shadow insurance to prime.

– Illamasqua ‘Wolf’ eyeshadow from the Neutral Palette (swatched and reviewed here) on the mobile lid.

– Inglot eyeshadow Matte 329 (matte dark charcoal brown reviewed and swatched here) in crease, layering for intensity in the outer V. I’ve also smudged this under the lower lashline and blended a little further down.

– MAC ‘Soba’ eyeshadow blended around the edges to soften the Inglot dark brown, and also give it a golden ‘halo’ type effect.

– Inglot eyeshadow Shine 39 (bright cool toned gold reviewed and swatched here) on the very centre of the mobile lid on top of ‘Wolf’

– Bobbi Brown Shimmer Eyeshadow in ‘Champagne’ blended in the inner corner as a highlight.

– The black and dark brown eyeliner from the Physicians formula Shimmer Strip Eyeliner trio for brown eyes (swatched and reviewed here) smudged along upper lashline and bottom lashline.

– Bobbi Brown Espresso Ink gel eyeliner to line lower waterline.

– Katy Perry falsies from Eyelure.

Cheeks:

– Illamasqua Powder blush in ‘Naked Rose’ (reviewed and swatched here as part of the Naked Strangers collection)

My top 4 lippies for redheads

Hi everyone!

Since going red, I’ve noticed that  some of the lipstick shades that I routinely wore  suddenly looked less flattering on me. When I went a more vivid shade of red a couple of months ago this problem became more obvious.

For example, most berry and burgundy lipstick shades looks odd on me now- with the red hair, these lipstick colours give me a distinctly late 80s/early 90s look that reminds me of my primary school teachers. Not necessary a bad thing, but not really a look I like on me. My choices in nudes, pinks, and reds have also changed.

I thought it might be useful for those with red hair and prospective redheads to list a few lippies that do seem to look right on me. This is in no way an exhaustive list, just the ones that I’ve been liking recently.

Here is my review  done back in mid 2011

Illamasqua Ignite lipstick

I reviewed this a long time ago- one of my very first lipstick reviews when My Funny Valentine was in it’s infancy- you can see it here as long as you promise not to pass judgement on my earlier efforts.

Illamasqua Naked Strangers Collection reviewed: Naked Rose, Swinger, Stranger

Illamasqua Naked Strangers Collection Promo

Illamasqua Naked Strangers Collection Promo

It’s always an exciting time when a new Illamasqua collection comes out. Seeing the promo images and the story behind each collection is a huge treat for me and highlights the ‘art’ in makeup artistry.

The Naked Strangers collection by Illamasqua features a kind of nomad slash goddess slash warrior; she is adorned by an interesting mixture of brazen metallics and soft pinky nudes. Although it does feature some bold, editorial type products, Naked Strangers is one of the more wearable collections from Illamasqua.

Illamasqua says…

In this delicate tipping point between intimacy and pleasurable detachment, we revel in the unknown; exploring the distance between pure monogamous, gilded faithful and uninhibited swinger. Exposed nude tones, adorned with rich licks of gold, leave you gasping for more. Don’t restrain yourself. Unless, of course, you enjoy it.

Illamasqua Powder Blusher in Naked Rose

Naked Rose is described as a ‘neutral beige brown’, but on my cheeks it looks more like a dusty neutral rose. Quite a sophisticated cheek colour which goes well with almost any look.

Like the other Illamasqua powder blushes, Naked Rose is quite soft and highly pigmented so one swipe of the brush will pick up a fair amount of product; it also blends beautifully giving you a very natural healthy looking flush to the cheek. This is my favourite product in this collection.

RRP AUD$42
