FOTD: Khaki Green and Blue Smoky Eyes with A Pop of MAC Gold Pigment

Khaki Green and Blue Smoky Eyes with A Pop of MAC Gold Pigment

I love the way that blues and greens look with brown eyes, and it’s really been too long since I used these (too easy just to reach for a taupe or a brown when you don’t want to think too much!).

There’s something about this particular colour palette (khaki green, inky blue, and gold) that I tend to gravitate towards- I think it’s because these colours bring to mind the romanticism of explorers and exotic spice routes. Now that we’re getting into the Autumn and (god forbid), Winter months, I will definitely be getting my teeth into these colours.

MAC Gold pigment is the best ‘true gold’ (no sparkles, no duochrome, no pink or bronze tones) eye shadow product I have seen to date- it is intensely pigmented, finely milled, and just like molten gold. You really need the tiniest amount on a pencil brush for this highlight, and the small sample pot I got from The Body Needs has lasted me years.

FOTD makeup breakdown:

Eyes:

– MAC Humid eyeshadow packed on to the upper mobile lid

– MAC Cork eyeshadow blended in the crease

– MAC Typographic eyeshadow (matte dark grey, not pictured here) to darken outer V

– MAC Prussian eyeshadow blended under bottom lashline

–  MAC Gold pigment applied (dry) to the inner corner of the eyes with a pencil brush. Mine is a sample size from The Body Needs.

– Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in Ink to line upper lashline and bottom waterline.

Golden Eyes and Coral Lips: A Lipstick Bandits FOTD

IMG_8226

Hi everyone :)

For today’s installment of Lipstick Bandits goodness- we bring you coral lips from our bandit bloggers around the world. As I was planning the post, I realised that I hardly touched any of my coral lippies throughout the Spring and Summer just gone, so it was a nice change bringing my MAC See Sheer out for a night on the town.

MAC See Sheer is a lustre finish lipstick. It is a peachy coral colour with medium to full pigmentation and a subtle glossy sheen- as with most MAC lustre finish lippies, See Sheer has a comfortable balmy feel on the lips and is non drying.

For a second I thought about making a pun in the title involving ‘Golden Eyes’ and ‘See Sheer’. I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t totally lame so I will have to find another blog title to pun. One day!

You may have noticed that the lighting looks different in these images. I’m experimenting with artificial lighting to extend my useful blog photography hours to past daylight- the days are getting shorter and shorter here in Australia and most days it is dark when I get up in the morning, and getting dark by the time I get home from work. These pictures were taken in my tiny bathroom with some hand held reflectors to help with the shadows. I’m struggling to get the level of clarity that I get with daylight even with manual focus on the DSLR but I suppose it’s better than not taking the pictures at all.

MAC bronzing powder in Golden and Bronze: swatches and review

MAC bronzing powder in Bronze

MAC bronzing powder in Bronze

Unlike many beauty addicts that I know I’m not really one to have a large collection of bronzers- I pretty much stick with one product that works and use it until it’s gone (can’t say the same about lip products!). I’ve had my ‘Old Faithful’ MAC Bronzer in Golden (pictured on the left) for over 2 years and as you can see I’ve really gotten my money’s worth out of it.

When I decided I was in the market for a new bronzer I decided to go a shade darker because I felt ‘Golden’ was probably a little bit too light for my skin tone when used as a contouring product, especially in the warmer months. Please welcome ‘Bronze’ as the successor to ‘Golden’ :)

‘Bronze’ is the perfect contouring colour for my skin tone and is a shade darker than ‘Golden’. It has a matte-satin finish which I find to be perfect for natural looking contouring (my pet peeve is bronzers with shimmer or sparkle). I like to apply it in a C shape from my temple to underneath my cheekbones with a contouring brush.

You can see it in action when I upload my very first makeup tutorial youtube video later on tonight :)

Marni, Modigliani, and Me: A Runway Inspired FOTD

I’m hardly what you would call a high fashion type of a girl in general, but I do love looking to the runways for makeup art inspiration each year- particularly Autumn/Winter RTW.

One of the runway looks that has stuck in my head over the years (possibly due to the simplicity and the resemblance to Modigliani paintings, which I adore)  is the looks that Tom Pecheaux created for Marni A/W RTW 2010 back when he was working for MAC Cosmetics. He used MAC Flourishing matte eyeshadow as a soft wash all over the lid right up to the brows, and MAC Spice lip pencil in the centre of the lips.

I used his idea of having MAC Flourishing eyeshadow all the way up to the brows, and switched up the lipstick to something a little bit vampier.

Beauty Haul: NARS, Burberry, YSL, MAC, and Revlon

If you follow my tweets, you may have heard my angry rants about how Kiss And Makeup NY lost my parcel, and how awful their customer service was. I had spent over $100 on an order, which never arrived. After 4 weeks of waiting, I starting emailing them to find out whether there were any delays they knew about- each time I emailed them, they took forever to reply (with a generic ‘sometimes things take longer through customs, give it another few weeks’ answer). In the end I never received my package, and Kiss And Makeup NY customer service essentially told me that it was my fault that I didn’t insure my items.

I mourned for my lost package for about a month, then I decided to reorder some of the items and pick up a few more things at Nordstrom. Elise from Stuff That I Bought kindly offered to be my makeup mule since she is living in New York at the moment, so here are my new pretties! (thanks Elise, you are the best thing ever).
