Photodiary: Cockatoo Island, Sydney

Ship building warehouse space on Cockatoo Island, Sydney

Cockatoo Island is a heritage-listed island in Sydney Harbour, approximately 20mins by ferry from Circular Quay. It is essentially a well preserved floating museum showcasing early Australian history (it was used as a ship building dockyard, a convict prison, an Industrial School for girls, and a quarry).

These days it’s become a popular cultural space, hosting events such as the Sydney Biennale, music festivals, comedy festivals; and is a playground for photographers. We followed a group of photographers (via meetup.com) to explore the island and take in the beautiful late afternoon light. Here are some of my snaps.

Yesterday we drove to Fremantle from Perth. We watched our 2nd Western Australia sunset, then spent the evening eating cheese at Whisper Wine Bar.

 Best Sunday.

Hippo Co. Cocktails and Whiskey, Canberra

Great live jazz bands every Wednesday night, and an amazing cocktail list.

We were here A LOT.

Tucked away upstairs at Garema place, Civic (I had a lot of trouble finding it the first time- just for the green Hippo Co sign and a small staircase next to Happy’s Chinese Restaurant), this prohibition-style bar with an extensive whiskey list reminds me of The Baxter Inn in Sydney. The Siglo cocktail is mandatory (smoked cinnamon, Gosling Rum, Amaro Montenegro, Dolin Rouge, Fresh Pineapple Juice).

Photo diary: Stormy afternoon at Lake Burley-Griffen, Canberra

During my 5 week stay in Canberra, my main jogging route was around Lake Burley Griffen near the city. I was lucky to be staying 10 minutes walk from the lake, so about 3 times a week I would put on my runners, strap my knees, turn on a podcast, and start my run.

It’s a really a beautiful view on a sunny day- with families of black swans, pelicans about, major art institutions around the lake, and 360 degree mountain views in the distance. One day I decided to take my camera out on a walk around the lake.

Of course I was caught in a storm and had to take refuge in a tin shed a few kilometers from the lake. After the rain stopped I decided to persist with my walk. All the swans and pelicans were nowhere to be seen, and the view was dreary- but I did like the dramatic sky so I kept the photos.
