A couple of weekends ago we decided last minute to go for a day trip to Phillip Island, (approx 90 minutes out of Melbourne). The weather was brilliant, and in spite of (or because of??) our lack of planning, it turned out to be one of the best Sundays I’ve had in a long time. We left after lunch and had a nosy around some of the sights on Phillip Island before settling in for a wine tasting at Phillip Island where we spent a large portion of the afternoon grazing on some really great cheeses and freshly baked bread. At twilight we made our way to the shore to see the Penguin Parade – something I thought was going to be lame, but turned out to be spectacularly awesome .
This is the simple makeup I wore- cheerful, simple, and long lasting. Those YSL Glossy Stains will get you through many a wine tasting without losing any lustre.

For the Myer Spring Summer 2013 Fashion Launch last week, YSL beauty created a look featuring a sun kissed colour palette. I loved the fun use of colour in this show, and was also really excited to see a YSL Glossy Stain featured (you may recall me going completely nuts over the Glossy Stains earlier in the year).I don’t currently own #21, but I do have the YSL Glossy Stain in #6 which is quite similar when it deepens with the second layer.
This season be transported to the outback of Australia. The rusty, sunburnt tones of the outback sets the mood for this season’s makeup look, paying homage to the beautiful photographs of native Australian birds by Australian Artist Leila Jeffries.

As you may know, I’m crazy about deep vampy lips- give me a nice burgundy lip with a glossy finish an I’m all yours for the taking.
The thing I really love about Brun Glace (which is shade #2, reviewed previously in this post ) is that it’s a deep vampy lip product with a long lasting shine and colour that wears evenly on the lips- these qualities are harder to find than you might think in a dark lip product. I also love how you can use lip liners under this Glossy Stain to achieve anything from a glossy mahogany brown lip, to a deep merlot, to a rusty red. Of course, you can do the same with any lipliner/lipgloss combo- but the shine never lasts as long on me with other lipglosses. Also, I find that when I wear darker colours with a glossy finish, I get a really obvious migration of the lip colour from the centre of the lips to the edges, which just means frequent touch ups to avoid the ‘dark lip liner’ look.
Anyway, look! I did a FOTD.

- Laura Mercier Bamboo eyeshadow applied all over the lid to the crease
- MAC Reflects Gold glitter pressed onto the lid, on top of Bamboo with a flat brush

I was so impressed with my previous YSL Glossy Stain purchases that despite my vow to reduce makeup spending I had to “invest” in some more. The colours that I had my eyes on were unfortunately not available in Australia so I purchased them from the Nordstrom (thanks Xiao !)
I’ve reviewed #5 Rouge Vintage and #9 Rouge Laque in my previous post. Just like the other Glossy Stains I’ve used previously the colour and the shine of these lasts for hours on the lips.
*pic heavy post*
#2 Brun Glace is a pigmented deep rusty brown, which has a lovely sepia vintage photography feel to it. Strangely enough some days it looks more berry on my lips. This is my favourite Glossy Stain out of the bunch- such a beautiful autumnal colour that wears beautifully on the lips for hours. For such a dark colour it applies and wears really evenly (unlike Violet Edition which is gorgeous but settles into lip lines)
#6 Camel Croisiere is a sheer caramel toned coral nude. With each reapplication the colour becomes less muted ‘caramel’ and progressively more ‘coral’.
#1 Violet Edition is a very pigmented deep vampy plum. It is a gorgeous gorgeous colour, but it I am a bit disappointed with how the colour tends to become a little bit patchy and uneven on the lips within about 15mins of application (the more layers the worse it is), particularly with dry lips. I’m still glad I have it though because it’s a very unique colour/texture and I have nothing like it in my current stash.

As you know, I’m mad about the Glossy Stains. My twitter and instagram feed are a GS love fest and I really think that these are the most exciting products release in recent times. In fact- keep your eyes peeled, I have 3 more of these babies winging their way to me from the US courtesy of the wonderful Xiao of Messy Wands) [update, here is the link to the new Glossy Stains]
The extraordinary thing about the Glossy Stains is the texture of the product- YSL has managed to create a formula where the shine lasts for hours on the lips and somehow survives meals and drinking (the stain lasts forever too, but there are plenty of products already on the market that achieve that).
I’ve been told the secret is ethylcellulose (a trick used commonly in the agri-food sector to coat food for a tempting shine), which is an ultra resistant polymer blended with silicone oil and ‘emollient’ oil in an aqueous base. GENIUS.
Glossy Stain #5 Rouge Vintage is a rose pink, and will deepen to a deep raspberry shade with two layers.
Glossy Stain #9 Rouge Laque is a cheerful tomato red which intensifies to a fire engine red with a second layer.
The product applies with a gel/watery consistency initially, then ‘develops’ on the lips becoming more cushiony lip gloss like in texture (and the colour deepens significantly on the lips at the same time).
I find this to be non sticky, and neither moisturising nor drying.
I’m sure you’ve all heard about the L’Oreal Shine Caresse, and how it’s a pretty good dupe for the Glossy Stains. I’ve tried both, and honestly- the formula feels PRACTICALLY IDENTICAL. The Glossy Stains probably apply a little smoother, are a little more pigmented, and have a more ‘sophisticated’ feel to the colour range, but dammit the Shine Caresses are an amazing dupe.’
Watch this space for a massive Shine Caresse swatch fest and review.
I don’t regret picking up these Glossy Stains though (and I have 3 more winging their way to me from the US) because I’m a sucker for luxury.
