The Maybelline Color Tattoos are one of my favourite cream eyeshadow ranges, and I’m steadily increasing my collection. (I’ve reviewed Tough as Taupe, Bad to the Bronze, Bold Gold, and Pomegranate Punk)
Barely Branded and Silver Strike are part of their new(ish) Color Tattoo Metal collection, and I was pretty keen to try these after reading rave blog reviews. They did not let me down- holy cow the formula is good. As good as, if not better, than many higher end cream shadows that I’ve tried.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone. I’m taking a break from nomadic life and spending the silly season with the family in Sydney, which I still call home even though there is a big chance that I won’t be living in this city for a long time. Most of my belongings are still in boxes, and I’ve done pretty well with one large makeup bag for the past 2 months living out of a suitcase (although I have purchased a few items along the way).
I’ve had quite a few people request step-by-step or video tutorials for my FOTDs over the past couple of years, and I’ve only just overcome my laziness to start photographing my makeup from start to finish. It actually doesn’t take that much longer, so I’ll be doing shooting start to finish for the majority of FOTDs from now on.
Still trying to figure out how to build collages without totally degrading the picture quality- let me know if there is a good way to do it outside of photoshop and I will love you forever! Picmonkey.com and Picasa are so user friendly and fun to use, but they seem to take an axe to image quality.

After trying the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze and Tough as Taupe earlier in the year, they quickly became one of my most reached for cream eyeshadows because of their great formula and gorgeous colours. It was only a matter of time before I was looking for my next Color Tattoo purchase, and I ended up picking Pomegranate Punk (to dupe my shrivelled old MAC Artifact Paint Pot), and Bold Gold at the Priceline sale.
Pomegranate punk is a metallic burgundy with fine silver shimmer. It’s a sheerer, cooler toned version of MAC’s discontinued Artifact Paint Pot. It needs about 2-3 layers to get good coverage and pigmentation.
Bold Gold is a sheer neutral metallic gold base with fine gold microshimmer. I was really hoping that it would look more like molten gold on my lids, but it’s more like a sheer layer of shimmer than a molten metallic effect- I prefer it as a base colour than used on it’s own. More on that further down.
Both Pomegranate Punk and Bold Gold are sheerer than my first two Color Tattoo purchases.

Like most drugstore crazes, I’ve come very late to the party with these Maybelline Color Tattoo cream eyeshadows. It was only when I saw James Kaliardos work his magic with the Color Tattoo ‘Tough As Taupe’ backstage at Richard Chai Fall/Winter NYFW 2013 that I really paid any attention to these products. I picked up a couple from Priceline, and fell immediately in love.
Tough as Taupe is a neutral concrete-grey taupe that has a little bit of runway edginess to it. It has medium but buildable pigmentation.
Bad to the Bronze on my eyelids is more of a neutral shimmery fawn/tan than a bronze. It is amazing as a sheer wash or in a smoky eye. Can be blended out sheer or layered for a fairly intense metallic finish.
Surprisingly these are probably comparable (if not better) formulated than the MAC Paint Pots in my opinion. They are VERY crease resistant and long wearing on my oily lids, and the product is creamy and blendable- Bad To The Bronze more blendable than Tough as Taupe, which is to be expected since the latter is a matte.
I’m very interested to see how they stand up to the test of time- I found that after about 6 months my Paint Pots (particularly the matte finish ones) have dried up considerably.

And here is my version of the look….
