Antipodean Beauties is a fun weekly challenge series for Aussie and NZ beauty bloggers, and I’ve decided to partake for the first time this week. The challenge this week was ‘RED’.
After multiple failed attempts at trying to recreate the red eyeshadow look seen on the runways every season lately, I decided to revert to the safer option of red on lips.
This is my favourite spring red lip at the moment- Illamasqua Ignite lipstick with a little bit of MAC Pro Longwear Lip Liner in What A Blast!

The latest Lipstick Bandit brief was an unusual one- the feature lipstick was to be chosen by a man in each bloggers’s life.
I chuckled when I heard about it for the first time. When it comes to makeup, my boyfriend is virtually colour blind- according to him, all my lipsticks are either ‘red’ (from my bright orange to deep purple shades), or invisible (anything nude or MLBB). He doesn’t understand why I’m buying more ‘red’ lipsticks when I already own over 70 tubes of ‘practically the same colour’.
So when he had to decide what shade he liked best, I applied one shade after another until he made his decision. I was surprised that he picked Tom Ford Private Blend Lip Color in Cherry Lush (reviewed and swatched originally here), since I never thought this shade suited me well. Interesting! The two runner’s up were Ellis Faas Creamy Lips in L101 ‘Ellis Red‘ and NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in ‘Moscow‘- two of my favourites. I found it really interesting that he hated orange/coral shades on me (even though he still insisted they were ‘red’).

Gatsby fever has well and truly hit our shores, making it the perfect time to dabble with some 1920s flapper style makeup a la Louise Brooks, Clara Bow, and Josephine Baker.
I still haven’t seen Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Gatsby’ yet, but I’m looking forward to watching it for the makeup and costume. As a film, I hear that it is not really a faithful adaptation of Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (the harsher critics even go as far as to doubt that Baz Luhrmann read the book all the way to the end), and that Baz Luhrmann has missed the point somewhat- celebrating rather than satirizing the excesses of the jazz age.
I don’t mind. I’ll be going to see ‘Gatsby’ to enjoy the film as something completely separate from the book. As long Carey Mulligan doesn’t play Daisy like Mia Farrow did in the 1974 adaptation – I’m happy.
1920s makeup has a very distinct look, and is characterised by smouldering grey brown eye makeup with the depth of the colour concentrated on the inner part of the eye; a thin, archless brow; and lips that look like they are pouting even when relaxed. They say that the unusual eye makeup placement is designed to give a ‘damsel in distress’ look- which explains why I look a little upset in all my photos.
The best 1920s makeup tutorial I’ve seen is the one by Sam from Pixiwoo- really worthwhile watching if you are going to a fancy dress party.

As you may know, I’m crazy about deep vampy lips- give me a nice burgundy lip with a glossy finish an I’m all yours for the taking.
The thing I really love about Brun Glace (which is shade #2, reviewed previously in this post ) is that it’s a deep vampy lip product with a long lasting shine and colour that wears evenly on the lips- these qualities are harder to find than you might think in a dark lip product. I also love how you can use lip liners under this Glossy Stain to achieve anything from a glossy mahogany brown lip, to a deep merlot, to a rusty red. Of course, you can do the same with any lipliner/lipgloss combo- but the shine never lasts as long on me with other lipglosses. Also, I find that when I wear darker colours with a glossy finish, I get a really obvious migration of the lip colour from the centre of the lips to the edges, which just means frequent touch ups to avoid the ‘dark lip liner’ look.
Anyway, look! I did a FOTD.
- TFSI to prime
- Laura Mercier Bamboo eyeshadow applied all over the lid to the crease
- MAC Reflects Gold glitter pressed onto the lid, on top of Bamboo with a flat brush
- MAC Mystery and Typographic eyeshadows to darken outer V
- MAC Mystery eyeshadow blended below bottom lashline
- MAC Omega eyeshadow to blend any harsh edges around eyeshadow.
- Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in ‘Black’ to line waterline and top lashline
- Bobbi Brown Shimmer eyeshadow in Champagne to highlight inner corners of the eyes
- MAC Bronzing powder in Bronze to contour
- Illamasqua Ambition (from Ambition/Katie blush duo) blush on apples
- MAC Lipliner in Burgundy
- YSL Glossy Stain in #2 Brun Glace on top

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and the Lipstick Bandits have decided to each do a V day inspired lip.
My favourite style of makeup for Valentine’s Day is fresh, natural, and feminine- with most of the attention focused on the lips. For this FOTD I used the Ellis Faas Creamy Lips, which have a texture halfway between a lipstick and a lip stain. This makes them lightweight, and fairly transfer proof (ie. practically made for kissing ).
- NARS Grand Palais Duo (dusty pink side of the duo) blended all over top lids.
- MAC Copperplate eyeshadow blended on top of the Grand Palais to tone down some of the pink.
- MAC Chromagraphic pencil (light nude) NW15/NC 25 on waterline
- Individual lashes placed on the outer corner of top lashline.
- MAC Bronzer in ‘Bronze’ to contour
- MAC Gingerly blush on apples
